Everything works. So why is it so tiring?

The checklist problem

Relocation gets treated as a logistics problem

We moved to Doha in August last year. The hardest part was not the shipping, the paperwork or the heat. It was that nothing was difficult, exactly, and I was still completely wiped out.

And the logistics do get done. Usually by someone very capable. Often by you.

Sorted within weeks

  • The villa
  • School places
  • Residence permit and paperwork
  • Bank account
  • Shipping and the car
  • Tackling the crazy driving

Nobody hands you a checklist for

  • Standing in the supermarket working out which of eleven flours is the one you want
  • Introducing yourself for the ninth time this week and still not having anyone's name right
  • Being asked what you do, and hearing yourself hesitate
  • Watching your child settle in beautifully while you quietly wonder when it will be your turn
  • Being completely fine, and completely exhausted

None of that is dramatic. That is exactly why it goes unspoken, and exactly why it accumulates.

Why it costs so much

You have not lost your competence. You have lost your shortcuts.

This is the bit I completely underestimated when we moved. Most of what makes an ordinary day feel ordinary is not effort or skill. It is knowing which brands are the decent ones, what things ought to cost, who to ask, and which rules are real and which are only suggestions.

Psychologists call these schemas: mental recipe cards, built from experience, that tell you what to do next without you having to think about it. Your home supermarket is a good example. You know how it works, where things are, what the packaging means, how to queue, how to pay. You don't think about it, it just happens.

Then you move, and every recipe card needs rewriting at once.

The shops, the currency, the driving, the school system, the work culture. Without that autopilot you have to think deliberately about all of it, which is why you can spend two hours in a supermarket reading labels and converting currency, and come out genuinely knackered.

Researchers call the cumulative version of this allostatic load, the wear and tear of your stress systems constantly adapting to ongoing demand (McEwen, 1998). It is rarely acute. It is constant, day after day, until you recalibrate. And it cuts both ways: go home after years away and the recipe cards you left behind have quietly moved on without you.

You can absolutely do it on your own. You just do not have to.

How it works

How do I help you relocate?

01

A conversation

Forty five minutes, free, no pitch. You tell me where you are with it, I explain how I coach, and you decide whether it is for you.

02

The work itself

One to one sessions of an hour or ninety minutes, in person in Doha or online, and confidential. Somebody thinking with you about your situation, who has no opinion about what you should do with your life.

03

The result

People who are coached consistently report better self awareness, confidence and personal wellbeing, at home as well as at work. In expatriates specifically, having socioemotional support available is linked to better adjustment.

Who this is for

You might recognise yourself here

Recently arrived

Tired, a bit spaced out, and quietly wondering what is wrong with you. Nothing is. Some call it expat fatigue. The research calls it acculturative stress, and it is well documented.

Heading home

Repatriation is routinely assumed to be the easy direction. It frequently is not, and almost nobody warns you.

Moved for someone else's job

You made the move possible. Now you are working out what it means for your own work, and what you want next.

Fine from the outside

You have done all of it competently, you look entirely sorted, and you are quietly running on empty.

What this is not

Coaching, not therapy or logistics

This is not therapy, and it is not a relocation agency. I will not find you a villa or chase your paperwork, and I am not the right support for depression, anxiety or grief that needs clinical care.

If what you are carrying needs therapeutic support rather than coaching, I will tell you that early and help you find the right person. Knowing the difference is part of the job.
